I always struggle to explain (and understand!) the idea of "superpositions" in quantum mechanics. As a mere analogy, I sometimes use the fantastic "spinning dancer" optical illusion, created by Nobuyuki Kayahara, who kindly allowed me to reproduce (and slightly modify - see below!) it here:
As you will have probably seen elsewhere on the web before, some people see this dancer spinning clockwise, some see it spinning anticlockwise, and some see it changing rotation randomly. The interesting thing is that some people just don't believe that other people see this figure rotating the other way around, and they seem to have no way of "flipping" the dancer.
So I thought to myself, can we somehow stimulate it?
