Control of Quantum Systems @Erlangen
We are a newly established research group in Quantum Theory at the Friedrich-Alexander-Universität (FAU) Erlangen-Nürnberg, led by Prof. Daniel Burgarth. We are interested in quantum control, open quantum systems and mathematical structures with applications in quantum technology. We are building a friendly and diverse group driven by open-ended curiosity and passion. We are particularly looking for applicants with good pencil and paper skills for analytical calculations.
28 Apr 2026 Three new Master's students join the group: Dev Raheja will analyze higher-order corrections to RWA in light–matter models with Davide and Leonhard; Robin Valk will study Kolmogorov bi-consistency with Davide; and Jonathan Bör is back to the group to study Bargmann spaces and their applications to bosonic systems. Welcome all!
10 Feb 2026 We explore how the notion of distance to unreachability gives rise to target specific Quantum Speed Limits from symmetries in our recent paper published in Journal of Physics A: Mathematical and Theoretical.
29 Jan 2026 In our new paper, Felix Fischer, Daniel Burgarth, and Davide Lonigro analyze the perils of finite-dimensional approximations, explaining why truncated Hamiltonians can fail to reproduce the correct dynamics.
12 Jan 2026 Ebrahim Saheri from Jena University joins the group as a Master's student. He will work with Daniel and Davide on distribution theory and applications to quantum information. Welcome!
13 Aug 2025 Two new (twin) papers on arXiv. Here we determine when higher-order squeezing operators are essentially self-adjoint, characterizing their self-adjoint extensions in the negative case; and here we use this knowledge to explain a seemingly paradoxical numerical effect: simulations of higher-order squeezing dynamics can produce starkly different outcomes depending on whether the truncation dimension is even or odd.
26 May 2025 Two new papers on the arXiv: we characterize quantitatively the performance of higher-order refinements of the rotating-wave approximation for the semiclassical Rabi model, and we find eternal bounds for spectral transitions in perturbed quantum systems.

The workshop "Control of Quantum Systems @Erlangen" [ConQuEr24] was held in Erlangen on December 11–13. It included talks by 13 invited speakers from all around the world, and a poster session. See the workshop website for all information. Thanks to all participants!
